Balakanda
Seventy fourth Sarga

After the night has passed , the great ascetic Viswamitra blessed all the young ones along with Rama then took leave of the two kings and left for the mountains in the north. After sage Viswamitra left , King Dasaratha took leave of Janaka the king of Mithila and proceeded to his city.

The king Janaka followed the King who was leaving. The king of Videha gave lots of gifts. He have hundreds and thousands of cows, blankets and silk garments. He gave well decorated elephants horses chariots as well as foot soldiers and excellent male and female servants as gifts. Delighted he also gave silver gold silver pearls and corals as gifts. Having given very many gifts and having taken permission of the King( Dasaratha ) he entered his inner palaces.

The ruler of Ayodhya left along with his forces , sons and the venerable sages. As he was going along with Raghava and the legions of Rishis the birds were making fearsome noises. The animals on the ground were moving about in a clockwise fashion. Seeing these signs the tiger among men asked the venerable sage Vasishta. "The birds are making fearsome noises. The animals are moving about in clockwise fashion. So my heart is trembling. I am worried ". Hearing those words of the king , venerable sage Vasishta spoke to him with sweet words."Please listen to the meaning of these signs. The fearsome noises of the birds signify the coming danger. The animals moving about in clockwise fashion signify the relief. Hence there is no need for concern."

Even as they were discussing thus there was fearsome wind which made the earth tremble. The trees were uprooted. Sun was covered by the darkness of dust. In all the directions light disappeared. The forces covered in dust were stunned. Vasishta and other venerable sages , the king and the sons remained in full sense. All others were stunned.

In that darkness , the army fully covered in darkness of dust , saw the fearsome one who was wearing matted locks. He is Parasurama ,the son of Jamadagni, unconquerable like Kailasa, unbearable like the fearsome fire of time, blazing with blinding light and impossible for ordinary beings to see . Carrying an axe on his shoulder as well as a bow and arrows which shone with brilliance of lightning, he looked like Lord Siva the destroyer of Tripura.

Seeing the fearsome form shining with brilliance, the venerable sages including Vasishta who ever involved in Japa and Homa started talking among themselves. "With anger of his father being killed has he come to kill the Kshatriyas? Earlier after killing the Kshatriyas his anger subsided. Has he come again with intent to kill Kshatriyas?" Thinking along these lines the sages offered him due worship saying sweetly " Rama Rama".

Accepting the worship offered by the Rishis , that powerful son of Jamadagni spoke to Sri Rama as follows.

Thus ends the seventh fourth Sarga of Balakanda in Valmiki Ramayana.
